Fidelity Flight Simulation and Toronto Airways have achieved Transport
Canada Level 5 approval for their Fidelity full motion Cessna 172S Flight
Training Device. The Level 5 FTD is highly type specific to the C-172S,
and includes Fidelity’s six degree-of-freedom motion base and 3-axis
dynamic control loading. The C-172 FTD will be used by Toronto Airways
in its Integrated Pilot’s Program, a comprehensive course designed
to train its flight students from primary through ATP license.
The Fidelity FTD is part of Toronto Airway’s efforts to achieve
Transport Canada “Approved Training Organization” (ATO) status.
ATO is a proposed Canadian regulatory standard that would allow flight
schools to adopt a performance-based training curriculum, one driven by
desired outcomes as opposed to specifying methods and practices. If adopted,
ATO flight schools will have strict requirements to demonstrate to Transport
Canada that they are achieving the desired results. In addition to allowing
for more efficient flight training the ATO standard would support Multi-Pilot’s
Licensing (MPL) training proposed by ICAO, the International Civil Aviation
Organization.
