August 25, 2009 - Offshore drilling contractor Diamond Offshore
has purchased a full motion Ballast Control Simulator from Fidelity Flight
Simulation.
The replication of the ballast control room and the design of the simulator
will allow Diamond Offshore to provide ballast control operations, stability,
and emergency procedures training for almost all four-hull semisubmersible,
two-hull semisubmersible, and jack-up oil rigs in its fleet.
The simulator will be mounted on Fidelity’s six degree-of-freedom
motion base. “Fidelity is able to simulate the cues the Ballast Control
Operators will sense to allow them to prevent unstable rig operations and
react quickly and effectively in emergency conditions,” according
to Mark Limbach, Director of Business Development for Fidelity Flight Simulation. “Historical
data clearly shows an unstable working platform in an actual or simulated
emergency scenario has an impact on decision-making. We want to provide
the most realistic simulation possible to protect the rigs and enhance
safety.”
Mr. Limbach claims Fidelity’s commitment to Instructional System
Design was a big factor in the award. “We’ll work with the
Diamond Offshore Training and Development team to create the scenarios
most effective in teaching safe rig operation. The objective is to provide
a simulator that meets all of Diamond Offshore’s training requirements,
rather than have them tailor their training curriculum to the capability
of the sim.”
“We have built a solid business in the aviation industry, but this
contract is especially important to us because it allows us to show that
our simulation capabilities are not restricted to aviation,” added
Graham Hodgetts, President of Fidelity.
